CAFEIN expanding its support to healthcare with yet another EU project: UMBRELLA!

How to manage strokes patients with AI and federated learning.
31st October 2024
Last quarter, this newsletter introduced CERN’s CAFEIN platform. No, CAFEIN is not a new CERN coffee delivery app, but more importantly, an AI platform enabling the training of AI models without sharing personal data. Its biggest purpose is to fundamentally enhance the role of AI in diagnostics, and therapy in the healthcare space by improving robustness and trustworthyness of the algorithms (https://videos.cern.ch/record/2299756). The team current focus lies in neuropathologies and in particular stroke management, in which CAFEIN is already hard at work with the EU TRUSTroke project, having delivered the first version of the federated learning platform to train AI algorithms to optimise stroke treatment.
Recently, the team behind CAFEIN have added yet another EU project to their already impressive pipeline. Introducing UMBRELLA, the over €26.9 Million EU project to revolutionise stroke care by implementing a holistic and patient-centric approach that enhances the entire stroke care pathway, from prevention to rehabilitation. Awarded in March of this year UMBRELLA, is funded by Horizon 2020 and consists of 34 academic, clinical, industrial and institutional partners across Europe. The project aims UMBRELLA aims to set new standards in stroke diagnosis, treatment, and real-time monitoring by leveraging novel technologies and data. This month, the consortium had their kick off meeting in Barcelona, Spain.

The consortium plans to design and implement the so called U-FL-Platform, a federated data system that connects seven top-tier European medical centers, allowing for the development of AI tools through CERN’s privacy-preserving Federated Learning infrastructure (CAFEIN). Ultimately UMBRELLA will improve stroke care outcomes and healthcare workflows, in the effort to save millions from the lifelong effects of strokes.
To achieve the project goals, CERN, responsible for the Federated Learning platform and co-responsible with Siemens Healthineers of the overall digital platform, will be working alongside several key players in the domain, including 7 university hospitals, 5 SME’s in healthcare, the Stroke Alliance for Europe and more. Main names include; Val d’Hebron Hospital (Barcelona), EATRIS, Siemens Healthineers, Johnson & Johnson, Philips, KU Leuven, Astra Zeneca, and much more. The team is stacked up to be highly capable and motivated to make a difference.

Expanding upon CERN CAFEIN’s already existing work, the objective is to benefit more than 1 Million stroke patients and more than 9 Million stroke survivors across the EU in the next 10 years. CAFEIN, as a CERN technology, will be pivotal in achieving this goal!
