IPAC 2025: NIMMS Showcases Medical Accelerator Innovations
By Amedeo Habsburg

The NIMMS (Next Ion Medical Machine Study) team from CERN made a strong impression at IPAC 2025, the world’s premier conference on particle accelerator technology. Hosted annually, IPAC brings together experts from research, and industry to explore cutting-edge developments in accelerator science.

At this year’s edition, the NIMMS team presented two major projects aimed at advancing medical applications: the HeLICS synchrotron for helium ion cancer therapy and a compact linear accelerator for producing Astatine-211, a rare isotope used in targeted alpha therapy. Both projects focus on compactness, cost-efficiency, and broader clinical accessibility.
With interest growing from European partners, the presence of NIMMS at IPAC highlights the increasing role of accelerator technologies in global health innovation. The collaboration aims to release technical design reports by the end of the year, and work towards implementing the technologies in novel particle therapy centres.
